As the sea level rises, the occupiable ground will face a drastic shift in the next century. There’s the double responsibility for architects to rethink the coastal ecosystems and housing that we are losing. I propose that the detached low-rise housing typology along the Jamaica Bay area, which is most susceptible to sea-level rise, be transformed into a combination of infrastructural landscape and collective housing that supports collective living. The idea of soil tower thus emerged, which, as a landscape infrastructural piece, provides habitat for wildlife, ensures food and water security for the community, and functions as structural supports for future suspended construction untethered by the everchanging sea level.
